RFID and Social Media at the Olympics

August 10, 2012

Cadbury House had over 5000 RFID-enabled Facebook check-ins during the first 2.5 days of opening.

For the London 2012 Olympics, candy company Cadbury, owned by Kraft Foods, created a temporary exhibit with giant, inflatable domes where visitors can play games and learn about the history of Cadbury.  The Cadbury House, located in London’s Hyde Park, is also utilizing an RFID solution from dwinQ which allows visitors to instantly share their experience on Facebook.

Before entering the exhibit, guests are given RFID-enabled ID badges which can be linked to their Facebook accounts.  Once inside the exhibit, guests can “check-in” on Facebook by placing their badge next to a check-in station powered by a ThingMagic RFID reader.  After the initial check-in, visitors’ badges will automatically be registered by the other RFID readers (including Impinj Speedway Revolution readers) throughout Cadbury house.  To post a photo on Facebook, a guest must simply enter a photo area and pose for the camera. The RFID reader will capture all badge ID numbers in the photo area and forward the information to dwinQ’s social media software which uses algorithms to determine which ID badge is the one in front of the camera.  The photo is then posted to the Facebook account that is linked to that ID badge.

According to Sonia Carter, Head of Digital at Kraft Foods Europe, around 75 percent of visitors to Cadbury House elect to to post pictures on their Facebook pages using the RFID solution.  Carter added that Cadbury House saw 5,824 check-ins by new RFID badge users and 8,958 photo shares during the first two and a half days of using the dwinQ system.
